The seaside community of Duxbury was settled in 1624 by Myles Standish and John Alden and incorporated in 1637. Predominantly residential, the town consists of 23.8 square miles of land area and has a population of 15,059.

The average household size is 2.79 and the median income per household was $118,272 in 2013 according to the United States Census Bureau. Duxbury has an open town meeting form of government with a board of three selectmen and a town manager. The real estate tax rate for 2014 was $16.15 per one thousand of assessed valuation.

Transportation Options from Duxbury to Boston

Located 35 miles south of Boston, Duxbury is home to a number of employees who work in the city. Boston is accessible from Duxbury via Route 3 and by MBTA Commuter Rail stops in neighboring towns.

Duxbury Community Services

Duxbury runs its own police and fire departments and its nearest hospitals are Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth and South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. In addition, the town has a Harbormaster and a highway department. Trash collection is provided by private companies but the town also has a Transfer and Recycling station, use of which is authorized by sticker.

Public and Private Schools

Duxbury devotes millions of dollars of its annual budget to its public schools. There are two elementary schools, Chandler and Alden, with Chandler serving kindergarten through second grade and Alden serving third through fifth grade. Duxbury Middle School serves grades six through twelve and the newly built Duxbury High School serves ninth through twelfth grade. In recent years, Duxbury High School has been nationally ranked as a top school in the country and was ranked tenth of Massachusetts schools.

Duxbury also has two private schools; Good Shepherd Christian Academy serves Kindergarten through eighth grade and Bay Farm Montessori Academy serves toddlers through eighth grade.

Seaside Fun and Community Recreation

The Duxbury Yacht Club is located in the area known as Snug Harbor and provides a number of amenities for its members’ use, such as a golf course, tennis court, and boat yard. The North Hill Country Club also features a 9-hole golf course that is open to the public.

The Percy Walker Pool is located near Duxbury Middle and High Schools and offers classes and pool access to its members.

In addition, Duxbury is home to Myles Standish Monument State Reservation. Within the reservation there is the Myles Standish Monument, a 116-foot granite tower with 125 steps that visitors can climb to the viewing area at the top. The area offers a sweeping view of Duxbury Beach, Plymouth Harbor, and the Blue Hills.

Duxbury Beach

Duxbury Beach is a popular recreational area for Duxbury residents and nearby townspeople. The beach is 6 miles long and is an important natural resource for the entire South Shore, serving as a conservation area and natural breakwater to Duxbury, Kingston, and Plymouth. Duxbury has a number of ponds and bogs and is known for its cranberry production and its oysters.
